FAQs

Below are some frequently asked questions (FAQs). We hope you find them helpful.

They will not answer all your questions.  That's okay. In our experience there are lots of questions and we are happy to answer them.  There are no silly questions.

I’ve moved before and never had a Move Manager.  Why would I hire one now?

Senior moves are unique.  Seniors are often leaving homes they have lived in for many years and downsizing.  This means many moves wrapped up in one.

  • What is going to the new home?

  • What is going to storage, if anything?

  • Which items are going to family members and how are they going to get there?

  • What can be donated?

  • What should be recycled?

  • What can be sold?

Move Managers are specialist in the move process.  Because it is a more complicated, you are hiring a temporary, personal assistant to help with your move.

I’d like to do most of my move myself, but there are a few things I’d like help with.  Is that okay?

Our services are tailored to your needs.  You can pick the services that are most helpful to you.

Will you work alongside my family?

Absolutely!  We welcome the involvement of family members.

I’m not ready to move yet, but I’d like to start handling some things now.  It is too early to start?

Starting early is always a good plan.  We are happy to help incrementally, getting you prepared to make a change when you are ready.

Why is it just for Seniors?

We specialize in seniors, but we don’t discriminate by age!  We help anyone who needs an extra hand in a move.

Why have I never heard of Senior Move Managers before?

The field of Senior Move Management is relatively new and rapidly growing.  The National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) was formed in 2003 with twenty-two companies.  Currently the NASMM has more than 900 companies in their membership.

What is the difference between your company and a moving company?

Moving companies are great at moving your household items, but that is just one component of the move process, particularly a move that involves downsizing.

Complete Transitions is there to help you with all the pre-move decisions.  After the movers have delivered your boxes to your new residence, Complete Transitions helps with the unpacking and settling in.  For a list of the types of things we can help you with, please see our services page.

Why is there a need for Senior Move Managers?

Senior Move Managers fill a need created by an aging population.

  • Aging American population:  In November of 2016 the U.S. Senior population hit 50 million.  Nearly 10,000 baby-boomers will turn 65, each day over the next 15 years.

  • Americans are living longer:  The fastest growing segment of the U.S. population is 85 and older!  This often means adult children in their 50s, 60s and 70s are helping their parents downsize as they are downsizing themselves.

  • Busy families:  Jobs, school and responsibilities for children can make it difficult for the younger generation to help the seniors in their lives.

  • Geographically dispersed families:  Our mobile society means a senior’s family is stretched across the country, even the globe.

  • New senior living options:  There are so many options for where and how senior are going to live.  Seniors usually swap the size of their residence for ease of lifestyle and the healthcare provided on site.  This means downsizing, usually to a space 1/2-1/3 the size of their current homes.

What’s the cost?

Because each move is different there is no single answer to that question.  There are many variables, including:

  • Size.  The size of the current residence and the size of your new home.

  • Sorting.  The amount of sorting required for a move.  Some people are minimalist and some people collect more items.

  • Decision Making.  The decision making process can vary.  Some seniors want to be involved in every decision.  Some seniors give initial directions then go away on vacation, leaving from one residence and return to their new, completely moved-in home.  Some families are more involved than others.

The direct cost of using Complete Transitions is a small part of the equation.  Often our costs are off-set by having access to our resources.  The primary reason seniors use our company is to reduce the stress of the move.  The end result is a better experience transitioning into the new home.
